Immigrants in Canada stuck in low-paying jobs

Professionals and degree-holders seeking immigration to Canada, beware! The number of degree-holder immigrants, including doctors and engineers, stuck in jobs with low education requirements, such as clerks, truck and cab drivers and salespeople, has risen steadily since the last recession of early 1990s, says a new study by Statistics Canada.

Employment problems for new immigrants will only get worse as Canada enters recession, experts warn. The study titled "Immigrants' Education and Required Job Skills" covered the period from 1991 to 2006.

It found that in 2006, established immigrants - those who had lived in Canada for between 11 and 15 years - had more difficulty finding jobs as per their educational qualifications than they did in 1991.

During this 15-year period, it said, the proportion of qualified immigrants stuck in jobs needing low educational qualifications rose steadily.

In 1991, according to the study, about 12 percent male immigrants with a university degree had jobs with low educational requirements. By 2006, this proportion rose to 21 percent.
Among female immigrants, the study said, these numbers increased from 24% in 1991 to 29% in 2006.

"These increases for established immigrants suggest that the difficulties, which have long plagued immigrants who have arrived recently, today have an impact on established immigrants," said Statistics Canada in a statement.
"They also suggest that difficulties experienced by recent immigrants are not necessarily temporary."

Among the newly arrived immigrants - those who have lived in Canada for less than five years, 24% university-educated men and about 40% women were doing jobs needing low educational requirements, the study said.

It listed many factors, including language skills, non-recognition of their credentials, mother tongue, age, and visible minority status, for deterioration in job prospects for degree-holding immigrants.

Canada lets in about 250,000 new immigrants each year, with China and India accounting for the bulk of these numbers.

Studies have found that Canada loses up to $6bn annually in terms of economic output by not utilsing the skills of immigrants for the jobs they are trained for.

Study: A Few Extra Pounds = Big Heart Risk

(CBS) For years studies have shown that most people can still be healthy, even when just slightly overweight. That was good news for many Americans - nearly 190 million are considered either "moderately overweight" or "obese." But new findings tonight show that when it comes to raising your risk of heart failure, every extra pound counts. CBS News correspondent Bill Whitaker reports.
Philippe Morotti works out to keep the weight off.

He was surprised to hear today's report that just a few extra pounds can weigh heavily on the heart and dramatically boost his risk of heart failure.

"If you're 10 lbs. overweight, I wouldn't worry too much about it," he said.
But you should, Whitaker reports. The findings of this major national study - analyzing two decades of data tracking the health of 21,000 middle-aged American men, all of them doctors - are a sobering jolt for all men.

"Not obese, but just being overweight increases the risk of heart failure by 49 percent," said Dr. Satish Kenchaiah, a researcher for the study.

For example: take an average man of 5'10." As the scale goes up, so does his risk of heart disease - even if he's only modestly overweight, between 174 and 208 pounds.

For every seven pounds gained, the modestly overweight 5'10" man packs on, he raises his risk of heart failure by a full 11 percent.

There is some good news in all of this. The researchers found that even a little bit of exercise, enough to break a sweat just one to three times a month, can reduce your chance of heart failure by 18 percent.

"If you are lean and active your risk of heart failure will be the lowest and if you're obese and inactive it will be the highest," Kenchaiah said.

Morotti said: "The bottom line is you need to make time to work out."
Especially at this time of year when Americans are eating the most.

Study in Canada

Canada's universities share a key strength: their high quality. Canadian universities have a long record of providing an accessible university education to students from across Canada and around the world. Reflecting the rich history many cultures and traditions, Canadian universities offer a mix of opportunities in a variety of educational settings.

The 89 Universities that are members of the Association of Universities and Colleges of Canada are located across the country, with institutions in every Canadian province. Taken together, they offer a wide range of courses.

In addition to universities, Canada's postsecondary system includes 175 community colleges, which respond to the training needs of business, industry and the public service, as well as the educational needs of vocationally oriented secondary school graduates. These colleges, also known as institutes of technology, university colleges or CEGEPS, historically offered diplomas and certificates rather than degrees. Today, some offer degrees themselves, and a number offer university transfer programs or provide programs jointly with neighboring universities.

A Range of Choices
Canadian universities provide a full spectrum of undergraduate and graduate degree programs, with faculty undertaking research of national and international importance.

Universities in Canada range from large urban, multi-campus and research-intensive universities, offering a wide range of undergraduate, graduate and professional programs, to small liberal arts colleges with a focus on undergraduate education. Others provide specialized professional programs in fields such as business, engineering, art and design or agriculture.

You will find that Canada is nothing if not diverse! University colleges represent a new model for postsecondary education, combining practical vocational programs with more theoretical offerings. Since Canada is a bilingual country, our universities demonstrate this by offering instruction in English, French, or even both!

Three universities are devoted entirely to distance education - a field in which Canada, a country of vast spaces and outstanding achievements in telecommunications, is a world leader. In fact, most universities in Canada offer a wide selection of courses through distance education, with formats ranging from traditional print or audiotape correspondence courses, to teleconference or computer conferences. Support systems for students who study at a distance are common, including counseling and study skills seminars, tutorial assistance by phone, fax or computer, and direct online links to campus libraries.

A Reputation for Excellence
Canadian universities have earned an international reputation for excellence. Their faculty have recognized research and teaching strengths in areas such as computer sciences, business (including MBA programs), health sciences, law, ocean studies, natural resources and agriculture.

In addition to their teaching, universities play a vital role in their local communities, offering concerts and plays, day care centres, sports and fitness facilities, lectures, museums, on-campus radio stations and art galleries open to all. Research is central to the mission of Canadian universities. In fact, 25% of Canada's research capacity is found in our universities - a far higher proportion than most others countries. Universities in Canada employ about one-third of the country's PhDs, who spearhead the national research effort. Students at Canadian universities are frequently involved in research projects, often during their early undergraduate years. Professors see research as an integral component to their classroom teaching. Canadian university research has yielded a wealth of innovations as important as insulin, Pablum, the artificial pacemaker, improved strains of wheat, and the identification of the genetic causes of diseases such as cystic fibrosis, muscular dystrophy and Lou Gehrig's disease. Today, Canadian researchers are world leaders in areas such as helping people cope with pain and stress, improving human memory, pulp and paper chemistry, dealing with the impact of technology in the workplace, and finding new treatments for cancer, osteoporosis and arthritis.

The System in Profile

Universities in Canada operate under provincial government charters. There is no formal system of university-wide institutional accreditation. Instead, membership of AUCC, in conjunction with the university's provincial government charter, is seen as serving in lieu of institutional accreditation, both in Canada and abroad. In addition, graduate programs and professional schools such as law, nursing, medicine and engineering have rigorous discipline-specific accreditation procedures. Computer science is also developing its own accreditation system.

There are currently 500,000 full-time undergraduates at Canadian universities, 200,000 part-time undergraduates, 75,000 full-time and 40,000 part-time graduate students. Student profiles have changed dramatically over the past decade, with more older students, more women and a greater multicultural mix. The social sciences remain by far the largest field of study in Canada, followed by education and the humanities. Biochemistry and computer science have been among the fastest growing disciplines at the bachelor's level in the last five years, closely followed by nursing, sociology and psychology. A wide range of student services is offered by most universities, including special tutoring in writing and math skills, help in finding off-campus housing, academic, career or personal counseling, and health services.

Many universities provide support to students with special needs, including single parents, women, those with physical, sensory or learning disabilities, aboriginal students, part-time students, gays and lesbians, mature students, and students of diverse ethnic and cultural backgrounds. Special programs are also often available to help first-year students improve their chances for success at university. Some offer for-credit courses aimed at integrating students to university life and studies. Many universities provide such assistance on an on-going basis throughout the academic year, with workshops in areas such as essay and exam writing, study and research skills.
A Lasting Reward

A university education translates into new skills, better job prospects and higher salaries. University graduates also have a better chance at promotion throughout their career, better health and benefit packages, as well as better pension plans. Clearly, the rewards of a university education last a lifetime.

Study Abroad: 10 tips to packing smart

There's MDH masala, there's Maggie Noodles and then there's Mom's special rasam powder -- how can you think of not packing those into the already bulging box? Packing has turned into a ritual of sorts and last I heard; there are professional packers who will even pack pickles for you: "Very safe, Madam. We guarantee. No spilling!"

As much as you don't want to upset your Mom for not taking stuff that she wants you to, there are a few things you need to keep in mind when it comes to deciding what gets to be part of the 20-something hour flight and what does not.

These are 10 things to keep in mind when it comes to packing:

1. Be advised that you must check with your airline regarding baggage regulations as they change very often. Do not rely on the information provided by your travel agent. S/he is NOT the authority. Your airline's Web site will explain in detail what you can and cannot carry. Remember to do this for each airline, in case your travel involves multiple carriers.

2. The US Department of Homeland Security has increased the level of security post 9/11, so be aware of current regulations. At the time of writing this document, with regard to hand-carry baggage, you are allowed to carry bottles of fluids, etc only up to a certain fluid ounce volume (very small bottles). Also you CANNOT carry any sharp objects or anything that can be remotely used as a weapon.

3. Get only the necessities. Before I get into what you NEED to bring, let me tell you about what DO NOT need to bring. Some of the usual unnecessary items that sneak their way to the boxes are:
  • Clothes hangers: They are an unnecessary weight addition, so avoid them. You can get cheap and good ones when you come here.
  • Electrical appliances: Most appliances here are designed for 110-120V, unlike the ones we get in India (230V to 240V systems). Unless you bring a converter, they will be useless. In any case, appliances like ironing box, mixers and grinders can be bought for cheap from stores here.
  • File folders: The US filing system uses the 3-hole system which is different from Indian system, so please do not carry these unnecessarily.
  • Copious amounts of spices: No matter how much your Mom tells you, convince her that you are not traveling to Antarctica! The punch line to be used here is "We get everything there too, Mom!" For the love of God, don't pack all those 10 kgs of tamarind. You get everything here -- EVERYTHING! Just get small amounts for the starting week, and you can buy the rest from here.
4. Before you buy the boxes, contact your airlines and confirm what are the size specifications and the weight that you can carry. All airlines are very strict about this, so it's best to know this before you start.

5. Don't just watch the ad; buy that box. Get two good boxes -- they should be able to withstand a lot of mishandling. Go for good branded ones, as they are now available in light-weight and durable materials. Remember that even a gram saved in the box's weight is a gram you can bring as luggage. Try to go for boxes that have identification marks and labels both inside and outside. They will be helpful when you need to retrieve your baggage at your destination.

6. Get good carry-on hand baggage -- cabin baggage (again, as per airline regulation). Get one with that has wheels as you may have to move them around a lot during your trip and you don't want to tire yourself carrying them. Also buy a good backpack. You will use it almost all the time in US.

7. Start your packing well in advance. If you rush at the last minute, you are bound to forget something. Keep a list of what you pack in each box. That way you won't have to wonder whether you forgot something.

8.Since you will be buying at least two boxes, it will be a good idea to divide all the things to pack equally in both the boxes. The reason is that sometimes one of your boxes may get misplaced by the airlines, so you won't be totally lost until the other one arrives. Pack at least one pair of clothes in the carry-on hand baggage (cabin baggage). You never know, but in the rarest case both your boxes might arrive late!

9. NEVER ever pack any original documents, certificates, cash, and other very important stuff in the boxes. Always keep them with you in your hand baggage. This is extremely important. If you lose your box, you may get refunded by airline insurance. But if you lose your original documents, then you're in big trouble! At the same time remember to take photocopies of all your original documents and keep at least one set in each of your luggage boxes.

10. Engineer talk, "The least surface area for a given volume is a sphere". Roll your clothes so that they take less space (of course, don't do that to your expensive formal shirts and suit!) Keep one pair of shoes aside to wear on the journey. This will save space in the box.

The most common ways to die at work

There are many who go by the motto 'work is life', but now a new Government report in Australia has listed ways in which life can actually end at workplace.

Topping this list are vehicle accidents that may kill a person while he is at work.

However, these deaths resulting from vehicle accidents, which accounted for 46 per cent of deaths, do not include deaths while commuting to and from work.

Falling from a height is the second most common way by which people die at work and being hit by a falling object is third on the list.

These shocking discoveries were made by the Australian Safety and Compensation Council (ASCC), which released data on work-related deaths and occupational diseases recorded from 2004 to 2005.

According to this report, restaurant and cafe workers were the most likely to die while commuting to and from their workplace, while there was a steep rise in work-related cancer and mental disorders.

Also, the report indicated that 249 people died while working, a further 98 died while commuting to or from work, and another 58 died because of being a bystander to work activity.
Apart from electrical shock, which stood at sixth in the list, being assaulted was seventh in the list and accounted for 3 per cent of deaths.

"One death in the workplace is one too many. The release of these reports serves as a reminder to all of us that workplace safety is a priority," News.com.au quoted ASCC chairman Bill Scales, as saying.

According to ASCC's report, top ways to die at work are:

  1. Vehicle accidents accounted for 46 per cent of deaths. This does not include deaths while commuting to and from work.
  2. Falling from a height (12 per cent).
  3. Being hit by a falling object (10 per cent).
  4. Being hit by a moving object (10 per cent).
  5. Contact with electricity (7 per cent).
  6. Being trapped between stationary and moving objects (6 per cent).
  7. Being assaulted by someone (3 per cent). Being trapped by moving machinery (2 per cent).

Hospitalilty to create maximum jobs

Aviation and hospitality sectors are set to emerge as top job creators over the next two years, as Indians increasingly take to air travel and the capital city braces to host the 2010 Commonwealth games. Experts say the recent surge in investment in the aviation and hospitality business could eventually create as many, or more, jobs than did the information technology sector on the back on a boom in outsourcing.

"In the next two years, aviation and hospitality are expected to assume the role of the top job creating industries, leaving the IT sector behind," said Rajesh AR, Vice President of India's leading temporary staffing company TeamLease Services. According to industry estimates, more than five lakh new jobs may be created over the next years as airlines expand fleet and the country adds new airports, hotels and restaurants to cater to a spurt in tourism.
"According to our study, more than 4.3 lakh jobs are planned in 2008," said E.
Balaji, CEO, Ma Foi Management Consultants Limited. A large part of this demand for new jobs stems from the fact that "the hospitality sector didn't add enough capacity in the last decade," Balaji said.

As a result, the hospitality sector is currently witnessing a lot of activity, he said. According to Ma Foi, the hospitality business will see about US$ 11.
4 billion in investment over the next two years. India is likely to have around 40 international hotel brands by 2011.

"New hotels are in the pipeline, which will open up jobs although poaching would be a problem," said Rajendera Kumar, Vice President of Federation of Hotels and Restaurants Association of India. The sector is expected to require a workforce of at least 95,000 trained personnel.
The aviation sector, growing at about 25 per cent per annum, is also expected to create jobs on the fly.

For those who like to drink cold water, this article is applicable to you. It is nice to have a cup of cold drink after a meal. However, the cold water will solidify the oily stuff that you have just consumed. It will slow down the digestion. Once this "sludge" reacts with the acid, it will break down and be absorbed by the intestine faster than the solid food. It will line the intestine. Very soon, this will turn into fats and lead to cancer. It is best to drink hot soup or warm water after a meal.

STUDY TIPS

Tips for success

The Pilot

When it comes to school success it is not about working harder but working smarter. The following are some study tips to help students preparing for upcoming exams.

Automatic homework schedule
Schedule study/review time into your daily routine so it becomes automatic. Remember: the rule of thumb for daily homework/review is 10 minutes per grade (for example, a Grade 5 student: 50 minutes per day, a Grade 12 student: 120 minutes per day). If you have no homework or studying to do, this time is then used for review of material and/or reading ahead. Regular review means greater retention of information (so less studying the night before the test!) and greater ability to contribute to class discussion. This daily routine is guaranteed to improve marks, reduce test anxiety, and empower you to do better than you thought possible throughout your education career!

Comfortable homework environment
Make sure you do your homework and studying in a comfortable space, but not too comfortable! Lying on your bed makes for a sleepy head, as does too much heat (increased heat actually slows down brain waves and makes it harder to think, taking you much longer to learn less!). We need a clutter-free workspace with minimal interruption to work our best. Never do your work in front of the TV (unless it's turned off) and only listen to music when you are doing a repetitive task that does not require you to analyze or memorize.

Organize your time
Make sure you always have an agenda for school and your own monthly calendar at home. Take a few minutes to write down all upcoming assignments, tests, quizzes and special events on your monthly calendar (perhaps a different color for each type). The monthly calendar allows you to see your month at a glance so you can plan ahead in case of conflicts (for example two assignments due at the same time, a big hockey game the night before a test, etc.).

Read effectively
Always skim a chapter first to focus on the key headings and chapter summaries or questions. Then read with a purpose to learn about these key sections and/or to find the answers to the chapter questions. Reading to discover information means you are concentrating on what you are reading and your brain will remember more. If you read too fast or too slow you will likely remember much less.

Organize your study notes into "chunks" of information
Your brain can remember more information when it is grouped into sections (five - nine "chunks" of information) rather than a sea of words. Use a highlighter to identify the key headings or topics. It is helpful to use one color highlighter for the main sections and then a different color for the key points within each section. Don't underline everything; remember your brain works best when you have organized your study material into five - nine "chunks" of information.

Don't give up too soon
Many students stop studying when the material becomes "familiar" to them. This may be sufficient for multiple choice type tests (you recognize the right answer when you see it), but is not sufficient for tests that require you to recall information, such as short and long answer questions. Before you finish studying take a blank page and see if you can recall all your key headings and then under each heading write down the secondary points you remember. This will show you if there are any sections you need to review again.

Take care of yourself
When you eat well, exercise regularly and get enough sleep (eight -10 hours for growing bodies) your brain works so much better! Sleep is especially important the night before a big test. Staying up late to cram information into your brain is a bad idea because your brain retains less information when you give it less sleep. Remember: one hour of sleep prior to 12 a.m. is equal in quality to two hours after 12 a.m. The earlier you go to bed - the more your brain remembers and the better it works the next day!

Grooming Women for the Top: Tips From Executive Coaches

Some women may be missing out on the executive coaching that equally experienced men get at work. A recent study shows that at 20% of companies offering such coaching, women receive it less often than men, while women get more coaching than men at only 5% of firms that offer it.

"Even though the data indicate that most women get treated fairly when it comes to coaching, there's still a significant number of companies where women don't get equal access," says Deborah A. Felton, a director of consulting in New York for Novations Group Inc., a global consulting and training firm. Novations conducted the study, based on an online poll of 334 human resource professionals. Men and women receive executive coaching at the same rate at about 75% of companies that offer it, the study finds.

Senior management -- usually men -- typically chooses who receives coaching, often selecting up-and-comers to whom they relate best, according to Felton. "A 'mini me' thing happens," she says.

The lower rate suggests that the playing field may not be quite level for women seeking to advance in management. In a competitive work environment, coaching can help managers and professionals improve skills in areas such as communication and meeting business goals.

What are women managers missing out on? CareerJournal.com asked five executive coaches about what they help women clients with most. Here's what they said:

1. Getting heard.
Commanding attention at meetings among colleagues and higher-ups can be difficult for some women, says Kerri Halmi, an executive coach in Oakland, Calif.

A manager at a large West Coast aerospace company recently told her that in group meetings, "she couldn't get a word in edgewise," says Halmi. The other participants, often all men, regularly interrupted one another, which the manager considered impolite. "She wanted to get promoted and felt like this was keeping her back," Halmi says.

Halmi says she advised the manager to engage in the same behavior initially. Then "she could propose a ground rule of not interrupting," she explains. Halmi also suggested that the manager tell the meetings' facilitator about wanting to contribute more, to gain his support. Since then, the manager has been getting heard, she says.

Another way to boost your visibility when speaking is to stand up or sit upright, and use hand gestures, Halmi says. "Hold yourself up high and take up as much space as possible to appear bigger," she suggests.

Women who speak quickly and in a high-pitched voice also may have difficulty getting their message across, says Nancy Atwood, senior vice president at Lore International Institute, an executive coaching firm based in Durango, Colo. You'll get more notice if you slow it down and swap your soprano for an alto. "It's a matter of executive presence," she says.

2. Looking and acting the part.
"Managers need to have a pressureproof demeanor," says Dee Soder, founder and managing partner of the CEO Perspective Group, an executive coaching and assessment firm in New York. "You want to be like a swan -- very calm on the surface, even though you're paddling like crazy underneath."

Fidgeting and other subtle behaviors, such as finger-tapping, can detract from a person's authority, Soder says. One way to curb such habits may be to give yourself a small reminder, such as putting your watch on the opposite wrist you're accustomed to wearing it on. The change can serve as a subtle hint to be still, she says.

Caroline McNally says she made several style changes when seeking a promotion to the executive suite as a senior vice president with a large credit-card company in 2000. "They viewed me as a high-performer, but maybe not a star capable of getting to that next level," she says. "I wanted to tweak my approach so that they viewed me in a different light."

Advised by an executive coach to blend more in with top managers, McNally says she began wearing dark-colored suits and less flashy jewelry. She ditched her strappy handbag for one resembling a briefcase. Instead of folding her hands in her lap at meetings, she put them on the table, she says. Less than a year later, McNally, now 51, says she was promoted to executive vice president. She has since joined Pay By Touch, a technology company in San Francisco, in a similar role, she says.

3. Focusing on the big picture.
Some women tend to concentrate so much on getting the job done that they may neglect big-picture thinking, a critical part of a leader's job, says Tricia Scudder, founder and president of the Executive Coaching Group in New York. "You want to be able to point to where you made a difference, so that if you weren't in that job, it wouldn't have happened," she says.

Recruit a friend or trusted colleague to help ensure that you make time to step back for perspective and a strategic vision for the organization, says Scudder. "Make a promise to them and say, 'I'll show you a draft of an idea by a certain deadline,' " she says. "Make a dinner date, so you have to show up with the goods."

Find time by handing off some tasks to others, says Maggie Craddock, an executive coach in New York. "Get savvy about where you can delegate," she says, and avoid overassisting others. Some women, she says, "lose track of where their jobs end and other people's begin.
